The first lie Maeve Devlin ever told Rowan of Brighthelm was that she had only agreed to the tour because the palace had asked nicely. It was a ridiculous lie, for several reasons. The palace did not ask nicely. It issued invitations in cream envelopes thick enough to stop a small draught, with embossing that looked as if it had been pressed by a man who believed democracy was a passing fever.
